BackPax Mag

Long-distance walking, the trails it happens on, and the documented record of both.

What this site covers

BackPax Mag is about long-distance walking as a documented craft: the routes, the people who drew them, the way a path is built and held together, the load carried along it, and the marks that tell a walker where it goes.

The subject divides into five sections. The routes, and who drew them covers the Appalachian Trail, the Pacific Crest and Continental Divide trails, the European GR network and the Camino. The path as a built object is about cutting, drainage and maintenance. Twenty kilos to five follows the ultralight argument and what it traded away. First walks and counted ones covers thru-hikes and how they are verified. How a route tells you where it goes covers blazes, cairns and numbering.

The complete roster sits on the archive.
