The towns close proximity to the sea allows a wide variety of unusual plants to thrive, including palm trees and sub-tropical flowers. There is a regular ferry service from Penzance to the Isles of Scilly. Five of these 150 islands are inhabited, and enjoy a sunnier climate than the rest of the UK. It is a truly remarkable place to see a play, or to explore during the day. Shakespeare always has a place at the theatres heart, and the 2008 summer programme includes productions of The Merry Wives of Windsor and Henry V. The theatre is completely open to the elements, so visitors are advised to bring sun protection during hot weather. Performances are only cancelled in extreme circumstances. The theatre is open to daytime visitors throughout the year, only closing on Christmas Day and Boxing Day. by Cat Hackforth FESTIVAL TIMES Golowan Festival will hit the streets of Penzance during the week of 22nd to 29th June.
