From its looming granite tors to its magical tumbling rivers, Dartmoor National Park is a landscape of mystery and contradiction. Vast expanses of high moor land are fringed by the lush river valleys of the Teign, Tavey, Dart, and Lemon. Over 5000 years of human activity have left their mark in the prehistoric archaeology and the vestiges of ancient farming methods, as well as local folklore. Today, Dartmoors 368 square miles are used for various activities. The Military conduct training here. Farmland is in abundance, including 28,300 hectares owned by the Duchy of Cornwall. As well as common grazing land, large areas are used for recreation (riding, pony trekking, walking, fishing and picnicking). Cycle paths are also in abundance. Quaint stone built farmhouses and delightful villages nestle in a jigsaw of deep valleys of broadleaved woodland on the moor's edge. Large conifer plantations sit high, overlooking blanket bog land and heather clad moors.
