Visitors Guide to oxford

The city of gleaming spires, classical music, theatre, academics and quintessential Englishness. This is the Oxford seen by many who visit, but there is a rugged, more independent Oxford to be found. Jericho, to the north east of the centre and the Cowley Road to the south are two such gems. In June every year the Jericho Street Fair epitomises the atmosphere and vibrancy of this local community. Far away from the majesty and historical presence of the University buildings, Jericho is a district of artisans. Cafés, restaurants and bars give the place a unique buzz. The Phoenix Picture House opened in 1913, and though it has been through many incarnations, it has retained a charming independence to its larger commercial brothers and it now shows first-run and art-house films.

At the other end of town, The Cowley Road expresses as much independence and character as Jericho and over the first weekend of July each year they too put on a street event, the Cowley Road Carnival. Since it’s humble beginnings in 2001, attended by 5000 local people, the event has clearly captured people's hearts and imaginations. By 2005 numbers had swelled to 25,000! Once you've explored the main sights of Oxford, do step off the main thoroughfare and experience something different.
