Visitors Guide to berwick upon tweed

Berwick Upon Tweed lies just 2.5 miles south of the Scottish border in the northern most tip of Northumberland. It is a town with a bumpy past; between 1147 and 1482 it changed hands, between Scotland and England, 13 times! The town’s dramatic walls were erected in the 16th century to keep the invading Scots out. They were the most expensive construction during the Elizabethan period, costing a whopping £128,648 to build!

Inside the Elizabethan walls lies a charming Georgian market town. Visit Wednesdays or Saturdays if you want to see the market in full swing and bag yourself an authentic souvenir! Or maybe hire a bike and take a ride across the town’s three main bridges over the River Tweed, each from the 17th, 19th and 20th centuries respectively.

Alternatively, take in the magnificent views of the surrounding countryside and river by taking a walk around the town walls. Tired out? Return to Hideaway hostel to put your feet up. The hostel is conveniently located in the heart of the old town, making it a perfect base from which to explore the town.
